These have been more common these days as people have been unable to get to the dentist during COVID 19 and many are now faced with a dentist telling them they need a root canal treatment or several root canal treatments. It is normal to consult a medical professional for a second opinion – after these are your teeth. The notorious perception of root canals is that they are extremely painful and uncomfortable. However, this is often not the case; the procedure is relatively simple and can be accomplished in one to three office visits. Root canals repair damage to the soft core of the tooth (the pulp) by removing the damaged pulp, cleaning and sealing off the root canal, and binding a crown to the tooth to ensure it remains strong. Most importantly, root canals prevent tooth loss, saving your smile!
A root canal treatment is where the canals inside the tooth have become infected, normally due to decay or a previous root canal treatment that has failed. Untreated tooth decay can lead to more severe infection. Consequently, if tooth decay is left untreated, the decline can reach your pulp and infect the living tissue in your root canals and lead to an abscess or other serious infections. If decay has reached your root canal, your dentist will go into the inner part of your tooth and remove the decayed material from your root canals before sanitizing the area. The dentist will then fill this area with an inert material called ‘gutta percha’ once the area has been completely sanitized and they have removed all of the infected tissue. When a tooth’s pulp is damaged, it needs to be removed before the bacteria breaks down and begins to multiply. Decay, large fillings, or cracked or chipped teeth can cause this damage. Without a root canal to aid in this pulp removal, the bacteria can cause an infection and even lead to more serious health problems. Such problems are extremely harmful to overall health, and may include swelling of the neck, face, or head, bone loss around the lip of the tooth’s root, and even drainage issues from the root. Symptoms of these problems can include toothaches, heightened sensitivity to extreme temperatures, discoloration, and gum swelling. If you experience any of these symptoms, we advise you to make a dental appointment immediately to see if a root canal is necessary.

Yes: If your tooth is severely damaged or cracked, it leaves the inner part of your tooth susceptible to infection and further damage. Any damage to your pulp can potentially necessitate endodontic treatment.
Sometimes, after root canal treatment, the tooth will be tender for a few days, and occasionally a couple of weeks before it returns to normal. This is not necessarily a sign that something is wrong, but is part of the normal healing process. It also sometimes happens that a tooth will feel slightly unusual for an extended period after treatment. An example of this is when the tooth feels different to your other teeth when you tap on it. Again, this is not necessarily a sign that something is wrong, but if you are concerned about any aspect of your root canal treatment, you should have it checked out by a specialist.
Pain is one of the most reliable symptoms of needing a root canal. However, in some instances, you may not experience any symptoms. Your dentist will be able to tell when you are in need of a root canal. First Stage
A root canal requires at least one clinic visit and can be performed by a dental specialist or endodontist. The initial phase of the root canal treatment is to carry out an X-ray to find out the state of the root canal and decide whether there are any indications of contamination in an encompassing bone. Your dental specialist or endodontist will then use anesthesia to numb the region close to the tooth. Anesthesia may not be vital, since the nerve is dead but, rather most dental practitioners still anesthetize the zone to let the patient be at ease.
Second Stage
The next stage of the treatment focuses to keep the region dry and free of salivation. In this stage, your dental practitioner will put a rubber dam around the tooth. An entrance gap will then be bored into the tooth. The pulp along with debris, bacteria, and the rotten nerve tissue will be expelled from the tooth. The clearing out process is refined using root channel files. Water or sodium hypochlorite is used occasionally to flush away the trash. You might experience a slight pain during the process however, the Root Canal Treatment Recovery Time is for 3-4 days.
Third Stage
Once the tooth is completely cleaned, it will be sealed. The tooth will be temporarily filled if the root canal isn’t completed on the same day.
After the root canal treatment there is almost always a portion of the tooth that has been removed. In order to restore your tooth and prevent any future infections, you will be fitted with a dental crown after the root canal treatment has been perfomed. This is also known as a ‘cap’. The crown will match the color and luster of your exisitng teeth. The inner part of a tooth is made up of pulp, the soft tissue inside your tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels, and root canals, the part of the pulp cavity that goes through the root of your tooth. When the pulp of your tooth becomes infected or swollen, you will need root canal treatment. Any infection or inflammation of the pulp will cause pain.
The root canal itself is capable of causing great pain when infected or inflamed. No matter how you got to the point of needing root canal treatment, you’re likely experiencing pain. Often, it causes severe, debilitating pain. If your pain is impacting your ability to live your life the way you want, you may need endodontic treatment. During your procedure, you will not feel any pain because your endodontist will numb your tooth. Following your procedure, your tooth may be sensitive for a few days, but this should subside. If you feel any severe pain after your treatment, call us immediately. You should no longer be in pain! Pain associated with needing a root canal is infamous. However, with proper endodontic treatment, you won’t be in pain much longer!
